The Democrat Obama administration normalized drone assassinations, presenting it as a more intelligent policy than the Republican Hunnishness of the Bush years.
With drones, sanctions, and negotiations, the Obama administration applied the variety of pressures available to the U.S. imperialist ruling class in efforts to limit and thwart capitalist Tehran's Mideast ambitions.

Why was Soleimani in Baghdad? To defend the government against mass protests for democratic and economic rights.

The explanations on the petty bourgeois left for Soleimani's killing take us back to about 2003:
*The president is "wagging the dog."
*The killing is a distraction from domestic political events.
*The White House is stupid, impulsive, short-sighted, just like the voters who put it in office.
*"Neocons" exploit the president's domestic political troubles in order to fulfill their long-term goal of conquering Iraq -- er, I mean Iran.

U.S. imperialism uses its hot and cold, carrot and stick tactics against rival capitalist states, including Iran. Sometimes they apply diverging tactics in the same week. This does not mean Obama was a more realistic or sensible war president than Trump. It means they are both capitalist war presidents, and one is not a lesser evil for the U.S. and international working class than the other.
This also does not mean the Tehran capitalist government is an ally of the working class - in Iran or any other country. The current Tehran regime was the beheader of the 1979-1982 Iranian revolution.

To aid these protests, and to speak out against the actions of the U.S. government, our demands should be:
US hands off Iran!
End all Washington's sanctions now!
