What’s behind the sweeping protests in Iran

The Militant Labor Forum presents:
What’s behind the sweeping protests in Iran

• Following years of economic hardship, U.S.-imposed sanctions, and Tehran’s wars, workers and others are protesting in cities and towns throughout Iran.
• Initially spurred by opposition to rising prices, unemployment and cuts to subsidies, some involved in the uprisings are now calling for an end to the clerical regime that has ruled Iran since a counter-revolution pushed back the 1979 revolution that overthrew the U.S. backed dictatorship of the shah.
• Iran’s rulers have sought to increase their influence across the region through intervention in the wars in Syria and Iraq, and other conflicts. Many in today’s protests raise opposition to involvement in these wars.
• What impact will these working-class actions in Iran have on politics and the class struggle in that country and across the Middle East.
