The Socialist Workers Party was the first to officially qualify its slate of eight presidential electors with state elections officials last week, according to Commissioner of Elections Angie Rogers. Each party that qualifies a candidate must have an elector from each of the six congressional districts and two from the state at large.

Each party that qualifies a candidate for president for the Louisiana ballot must have an elector from each of the six congressional districts and two from the state at large.

James Harris, who ran on the party's ticket for president in 1996 and 2000, and Maura DeLuca, the party's vice presidential candidate, head ticket in the Nov. 6 election. DeLuca campaigned in the state last week after submitting the slate of electors. She said the party will be on the ballot in at least seven other states, including Washington, New Jersey, Iowa and Florida, and expects to be written in on ballots in other states.

DeLuca, a native of Pittsburgh and now a resident of Lincoln, Neb., said that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans "represent the interest of a vast majority" of the American people. She said although her party faces a long-shot chance of winning, it is bringing to light issues such as police brutality and the need for more child-care centers and hospitals.
