Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht

Revolutionary icons remembered

DPA/Berlin

Icons remembered: Communists and socialists lay down flowers at the Monument for the Socialists at Berlin’s Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery to commemorate the murder of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. Liebknecht and Luxemburg, both representatives of the European labour movement, were murdered by far-right soldiers during an uprising on January 15, 1919, after transforming the left-wing Spartacus League into the German Communist Party and trying to proclaim a German Soviet Republic
